ECOPAGTA advances in preparing the dossiers for the incorporation of Yanacocha and Buenaventura into the National System of Protected Areas

Strengthening the protection of strategic ecosystems requires combining conservation, territorial planning, and financial sustainability. With this vision, ECOPAGTA is carrying out the consultancy for preparing the technical dossiers for the Yanacocha and Buenaventura conservation areas for the Jocotoco Foundation, as part of the process aimed at their incorporation into the Private Subsystem of the National System of Protected Areas (SNAP).
The Jocotoco Foundation manages areas of high ecological, sociocultural, and scenic value that play fundamental roles in biodiversity conservation, ecosystem connectivity, and the provision of ecosystem services. In this context, preparing the dossiers is a strategic step toward strengthening their recognition and legal protection, in accordance with the national regulatory framework and the guidelines established by the National Environmental Authority.
A technical process built jointly
ECOPAGTA, as a specialized consulting firm, is currently providing technical assistance to the Jocotoco Foundation in integrating the information needed to submit the dossiers to the Ministry of Environment and Energy (MAE). The process currently has an approved integrated work plan and is moving forward through ongoing coordination between the technical teams of ECOPAGTA and the Jocotoco Foundation.
As part of this stage, several working meetings have been held to review and adjust the polygons for the Yanacocha and Buenaventura conservation areas. This exercise seeks to ensure that the proposed delimitation meets technical, territorial, and regulatory criteria, and that the dossiers contain the necessary elements for their subsequent evaluation by the National Environmental Authority.
From the territory to sustainability
The technical teams are currently working on key components for consolidating the dossiers, including boundary demarcation of the areas, the alternatives study, and the development of the Financial Sustainability Plan.
These components will complement the biophysical and territorial information with elements related to the long-term management and sustainability of the areas. In this way, the process is not limited to the documentary preparation required for a potential incorporation into SNAP, but also seeks to help establish technical and financial conditions that support effective management of these conservation spaces.
The preparation of the Yanacocha and Buenaventura dossiers thus represents a process of articulation between private conservation, environmental planning, and institutional management, in which ECOPAGTA and the Jocotoco Foundation work together to consolidate technical information and proposals that will be submitted for consideration by the Ministry of Environment and Energy.
The process will continue with the development and validation of the various technical components of the dossiers, incorporating the adjustments that may be needed for their submission to the National Environmental Authority.
